Steve Harvey, who claims to be a Christian, has denied that there is only one way to heaven in a recent video:
Hey, I'm Steve Harvey: stand up comedian, entertainer, television host, family man, but most importantly, I happen to be a man of faith. … There's no one way to heaven, no one way to paradise. It's like television. Now, there's over 800 channels of cable, and they're all pretty entertaining. So I'm pretty sure, man, that to get to heaven, there's got to be more than one route, because somebody watching another channel or taking another channel than you, they're still getting entertained, and they're probably still getting to heaven.
Steve Harvey does not believe what Christ taught
Though Harvey claims to be a man of faith, his words, however, demonstrate that he does not actually believe what the Lord Jesus Christ taught. These words directly contradict very clear biblical teaching and constitute a blatant denial of the gospel and Christian faith:
John 3:18 He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 5:22-23 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent Him.
John 8:24 Ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am He, ye shall die in your sins.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me."
Luke 13:3 Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
1 John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made Him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of His Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
Jesus declared that He was the only way to the Father, and therefore to assert that there are other ways to God is to make Him a liar. If there are other ways to God, then Christ died for nothing! Why would He have to come to this sin-cursed world and endure the awful blasphemies and abuses of sinners, and then die a bloody death upon a cross, if all religions are valid? If there are other ways to God, then Christ's entire ministry in coming to this earth, dying, and being raised from the dead was totally pointless and unnecessary. Such a belief nullifies the cross of Christ! Such a belief is a monstrous blasphemy, a repudiation of the life, death, and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ, and a trampling of His precious blood. The fact that Christ came and spilled His blood is proof positive that there is only one way to the Father!
Jesus declared that the way to life was narrow and difficult and only few find it, and that many tread the broad path that leads to destruction. Harvey has claimed the exact opposite, based upon an absurd argument appealing to the multiplicity of television channels.
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
When asked by His disciples if only few would be saved, the Lord offers a response totally contrary to that which Harvey has given:
Luke 13:23-24 Then said one unto him, "Lord, are there few that be saved?" And He said unto them, "Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able."
Take your pick; who is right? The Lord Jesus, or Steve Harvey?
Steve Harvey does not believe the First Commandment
Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.
The consequences for violating this commandment are dire. Under the Old Covenant, God explicitly commanded that those who would dare to entice others to follow after other gods were to be put to death (Deuteronomy 13:6-11). Under the New Covenant, the Lord has warned that no idolater will enter the kingdom of heaven, but that they provoke and will surely inherit the wrath of God, unless they repent and turn from their idols (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Ephesians 5:5-6; 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10). Almighty God has made it expressly clear that He alone is God, and that all other so-called gods are false:
Deuteronomy 32:39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with Me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of My hand.
Isaiah 44:6-8 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and His redeemer the LORD of hosts: "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside Me there is no god. … Is there a god beside Me? Yea, there is no god; I know not any."
Who is correct? God, who declares that there is no other god besides Him, or Steve Harvey, who claims all religions are valid? The answer is obvious. Harvey has dared to defy God to His face.
Self-contradicting false religion
Looking to find fault with "religious people" who think their religion is right and others are wrong, the video ironically commits the exact same thing it is criticizing by upholding Harvey's pseudo-Christian, Christ-denying religious view as right and dismissing the views of "religious people" as wrong:
See, often times people who are religious think their religion is right and everybody else is wrong—"there is only one way to God." But Steve's faith is unique because it's really not about that.
First of all, if it is wrong to view the religious beliefs of others as wrong, why then is this video finding fault with these "religious people"? Why doesn't this video accept their religious views as equally valid as the one they themselves are propagating? This video is hereby contradicting itself. Secondly, it is Jesus who declared that His religion alone is right and everybody else is wrong (John 8:24; 14:6). He declared that those who are not with Him—who proclaim, uphold, and live by His truth and gospel—are against Him (Matthew 12:30). He counts as His enemy anyone and everyone who refuses to embrace Him and His teaching. This video is presenting an alternative view which it claims is superior to that of Christ's!
The video then goes on to explain how Harvey, as a sign of respect to other religions, gave one of his sons a Christian name, and another a Muslim name. They also point out how a mosque was renamed as a token of "religious tolerance" and respect to churches:
What Steve did reminds me a lot of this mosque. This mosque in Abu Dhabi belongs to people in the Islamic faith. But, as a sign of tolerance to the churches next to them, they renamed the mosque to "Mary, Mother of Jesus Mosque." It's just a name, but it's a big step to showing respect. And it's not just about Christians and Muslims, it's about Christians, Muslims, Jews, and everybody else. At a time when religious intolerance is on the rise, we need many, many more of these mosques, many, many more of people like Steve. After hanging out with Steve for a week and visiting mosques, churches, and museums in the Emirates, I am convinced religious harmony, religious respect, religious tolerance is the most important thing, and we need to promote that every single day.
It is important to understand that religious "tolerance" has nothing to do with viewing other religions as valid. This is affirmation, not tolerance. To tolerate something would be to put up with that which you do not approve or regard as valid! The sentiment behind this video, however—which is extremely popular in our day—equates tolerance with affirmation, and one is viewed as intolerant who does not recognize as valid the views of others which contradict his own. Yet, the only ones who are truly intolerant are those who propagate this false view of tolerance—they are the ones who will not tolerate those who refuse to affirm other views; such will be demonized and vilified as bigots and scoundrels.
Furthermore, only those who are ignorant of what Islam teaches would make or be duped by such statements. Adding the names "Mary" or even "Jesus" to a mosque is not a "sign of tolerance" to churches because Islam itself recognizes Mary and Jesus—along with Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and many others! These names are featured prominently in the Qur'an, so to include them in the naming or renaming of a mosque is by no means a "compromise" for Islam. The only problem, however, is that Islam's account of these people is a perversion of what is recorded in the Old and New Testaments.
Steve Harvey Affirms Islam
"Islam is a religion of peace. Why you got a problem with peace?" — Steve Harvey
Not only does this video repudiate the Christian faith, it also misrepresents Islam, which is propounded as a peaceful, tolerant religion. But is this true? What does Islam actually teach about other religions? The following quotes are taken from the Qur'an:1
The Qur'an condemns those who believe in the deity of Christ (an essential, central doctrine of Christianity):
Qur'an 5:72, 75 They do blaspheme who say: "Allah is Christ the son of Mary." But said Christ: "O Children of Israel! worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Whoever joins other Allahs with Allah, Allah will forbid him the garden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help. … Christ the son of Mary was no more than an apostle; many were the apostles that passed away before him.
The Qur'an curses those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God:
Qur'an 9:30 The Jews call 'Uzair a son of Allah, and the Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah's curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth!
The Qur'an condemns those who believe in the Trinity (another essential, central doctrine of Christianity):
Qur'an 5:73 They do blaspheme who say: Allah is one of three in a Trinity: for there is no Allah except One Allah. If they desist not from their word (of blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall the blasphemers among them.
The Qur'an condemns to hell all who reject Islam:
Qur'an 98:6 Those who reject (Truth), among the People of the Book and among the Polytheists, will be in Hell-Fire, to dwell therein (for aye). They are the worst of creatures.
The Qur'an forbids Muslims from befriending Christians or Jews (except only if it is necessary to protect Islam):
Qur'an 3:28 Let not the believers take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah. Except by way of precaution, that ye may guard yourselves from them. But Allah cautions you (to remember) Himself; for the final goal is to Allah.
Qur'an 3:118 O ye who believe! Take not into your intimacy those outside your ranks: they will not fail to corrupt you. They only desire your ruin. Rank hatred has already appeared from their mouths. What their hearts conceal is far worse.
Qur'an 5:51 O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.
The Qur'an commands Muslims to go to war with unbelievers:
Qur'an 8:38-39 Say to the Unbelievers, if (now) they desist (from Unbelief), their past would be forgiven them; but if they persist, the punishment of those before them is already (a matter of warning for them). And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do.
Qur'an 9:5 But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
Qur'an 9:29 Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.
Qur'an 9:68, 73 Allah hath promised the Hypocrites men and women, and the rejectors, of Faith, the fire of Hell: therein shall they dwell. Sufficient is it for them: for them is the curse of Allah, and an enduring punishment. … O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be firm against them. Their abode is Hell—an evil refuge indeed.
Does this sound like a "religion of peace"? Certainly—if by "peace" you mean every non-Muslim is either dead or subjugated! Does this sound like a "tolerant" religion? Certainly—if the "tolerance" is to be extended only to fellow Muslims. Again, only those who are ignorant of what Islam teaches make such claims. The Bible and the Qur'an are totally incompatible. Christianity declares the truth that Jesus is the Son of God, but Islam claims God has no son. The Qur'an directly contradicts Christianity and condemns everyone who embraces it.
The Lord Jesus Christ, on the other hand, has warned that everyone who has not embraced Him on His own terms and received Him as God stands condemned and remains in danger of eternal damnation (John 5:22-23; 8:24). This is because everyone has sinned, and a holy and righteous God will one day punish all who are guilty. Since everyone is born inheriting a fallen, sinful nature from Adam, each person comes into this world already condemned and exposed to the wrath and justice of Almighty God (John 3:18; Ephesians 2:1-3), which is demonstrated by the fact that they immediately pursue all manner of sin, even from birth (Psalm 58:3). It is only in Christ that those who are guilty of sin have any hope of redemption, because it is only in Christ that one's sins are taken away. This is why there is only one way to the Father, as Christ declared, because He alone saves sinners from their sins (Matthew 1:21; 1 Timothy 1:15). Christ and Christ alone purchased salvation by His own blood, having taken the sins of His people, bearing their guilt and punishment, and dying in their place—under the wrath of God—upon the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21), and being raised to life again. No other religion offers a holy, sinless Substitute who can take away sin and satisfy divine justice.
Steve Harvey has, by these words, departed into anti-Christian heresy. No one who believes what Harvey has claimed is a true Christian, for a Christian is one whose faith rests upon God's testimony concerning His Son—that Jesus Christ is the only way to be saved from sin and reconciled to God (Romans 5:10; 1 John 4:1-3, 14-15; 5:10-12).
